The plants produce fat flower spikes that bloom straight down and need to be grown in a basket with large openings. In fact one of these recently bloomed down through the bench the baskets were sitting on and by the time we noticed it was too late to move it.  The only way we could enjoy it and point it out to visitors was to squat on the gravel and look under the bench.

They have a vigorous root system that consists of two distinct types.  One is the usual white plump type with green tips when in growth and the other are skinnier roots that will come out of the basket and turn upward, stop and slightly wither.  Their purpose in nature is to catch any organic debris to feed the plant and are called trash basket roots.  Don't trim them as they are still viable and a sign of a happy plant.

Stanhopeas are known for their short flower life. These flowers last three to five days.  Though fleeting in orchid terms, they are so worth it with their size, colors and  wonderful perfume. A  good specimen can bloom several times through out the summer.

Grown best if kept well hydrated with intermediate temperatures and medium bright light.
As with all orchids good humidity is always helpful.
